Each family is sponsored through Ordinary Hero with the ultimate goal to graduate from sponsorship and become self sufficient. Here is a look at a family that has been empowered through job skill training and is approaching self sufficiency and sponsorship graduation.   • Meet Tigist

    Tigist Mulugeta is a mother of two kids. The oldest is Gezahegn Habtamu, he is in grade 8. Dagim Worku is her second, and he is 4 years old. Her first husband got married to another woman, and her current husband is a soldier who is on duty. She doesn’t know his current condition, or how he’s doing. Tigist is HIV positive, she is taking medicine for it and her son is too. Tigist and her son are both losing weight due to malnutrition. She washes clothes for individuals, but the income that she gets is too little to cover their basic needs. She is in need of a regular sponsor.

    Dasse Negese is a 32-year-old mother of three who migrated from a rural area to the city in search of healing and opportunity. She lives with epilepsy which limits her ability to work. Her husband lives with the family but does not have stable employment at the moment. Their children are: Lema (18), Yalfal (4), and Daneal (4 months). This family is in need of both regular and rental support.

  • Meet Yeshi

    Yeshi is a 60-year-old woman who lives with her husband and is caring for their 11-year-old granddaughter, Brhan, a 5th grade student. Years ago, their daughter, Netsanet, became pregnant while working as a housemaid and left Brhan in Yeshi’s care to continue working elsewhere. Yeshi and her husband embraced Brhan as their own and raised her with love, expecting no support. For years, her husband worked to provide for the family. However, seven months ago, he suffered a serious fall and is now bedridden with no income and growing medical expenses. Yeshi is now forced to beg near local churches in order to survive and care for Brhan. This family is now in need of both regular and rental support.

  • Meet Alazar

    Alazar Fasika is a 9-year-old boy currently in 3rd Grade. He is a motivated student who enjoys learning and dreams of becoming a doctor one day so he can help others. Alazar’s mother, Tsegereda, recently gave birth to Yabkale, who is now just four months old. The children’s father does not have a permanent job, leading to unstable household income. Tsegereda volunteers with a local feeding program, contributing meaningfully to her community, but this work does not provide a reliable source of income for her family. They are in need of both a regular and rental sponsorship to help ensure Alazar can stay focused in school and continue pursuing his dream.

  • Meet Gedion

    Gedion Tesfaye is 13 years old and currently in Grade 7. He has two younger sisters and one brother. Gedion’s favorite subject is Math, and his favorite color is red. One day, he dreams of becoming an engineer. His mother, Hanna, carries firewood for work, and his father works in weaving, although he is dealing with some health issues, which limits his ability to work consistently. Despite their efforts, the family’s income is not enough to meet all of their basic needs. They are in need of both regular and rental support.

  • Meet Sisay

    Sisay Zewede is a 30-year-old mother living with her 9-year-old daughter, Tarike, who is currently in 2nd grade. Sisay supports them by working in people’s homes—baking injera, cleaning, and washing clothes—but the work is not steady. As a result, Sisay and her daughter sometimes go without meals or are forced to ask neighbors or strangers for food. They are in need of a regular sponsor to help provide consistent food support and stability to ensure Tarike can continue her education in a safe and secure environment.

  • Meet Adanech

    Adanech Molla is a single mother who is HIV positive and also has epilepsy. She is not currently employed due to her health status, and her source of income that she receives from a government program and church support is only $12 birr. Her son, Abenezer, is 13 years old and in grade 7. Adanech’s other son, Bereket, passed away at the age of 22 due to blood cancer. She is now struggling to make ends meet for her and Abenezer. Adanech is in need of financial support to feed her son.

    Meseret Demisse is 34 years old. She has four children. Her oldest is Welela. She is 14 years old and in grade 2. Her dream is to become an engineer one day. Temesgen is 8 years old and is also in grade 2.  His dream is to be a teacher. Her third child is Tinsae who is three years old, and her youngest child is Amen, who is one. Meseret currently has health problems related to her mental health. Their father works as a daily laborer. They are in need of a regular sponsor to help continue providing for their children.

  • Meet Yabsira

    Yabsira Tesyafeis a 20-year-old with a passion for science and technology. He lost both of his parents over ten years ago and has been living in an orphanage for the past 12 years alongside his younger sister, Hanna. Yabsira recently began college and is already making strides in his field of interest. He has received certificates for his innovative work, including designing a remote-operated farming truck. His dream is to continue his studies and pursue a career in artificial intelligence. Yabsira is in need of a regular sponsorship to help support his education and living expenses as he works toward a brighter future.

  • Meet Tsinat

    Tsinat Tesfaye is 19 years old. She lost both of her parents when she was three years old. Her and her sister entered an organization called Missionaries of Charity. She lived there for almost 14 years, receiving education, shelter, food, and clothing. Suddenly, for reasons unknown to her, the organization closed, making her life more difficult than before. She stopped going to school. After a year of living with a stranger, a priest from a missionary organization found her and transferred her to the Kidane Mihret Orphanage. She started learning short-term fashion and design. Although the most important thing for her was to finish her primary school, it was not possible due to various reasons. As the eldest girl in the orphanage, it’s time for her to start living outside of it in a group home to adapt to life's challenges. Ultimately, her goal after finishing school is to open a large organization that helps those in need. To help Tsinat move on from the orphanage and sponsor her in our aged out program, it would be $150/month.

    Meselech is the mother of four children, but only lives with two of them. Her husband died of the measles about three years ago. Meselech became blind before having her three children due to an untreated illness. Because of her blindness, she fell while pregnant and her child has developmental problems as well.

    Meskerem Mengiste is the devoted mother of two children: Titina, age 7, and Babi, age 3. Four years ago, she moved from the countryside to settle in Entoto. Two years later, her husband left her to care for the children on her own. Meskerem previously earned a living by baking injera, but due to ongoing health issues—including kidney problems, heart complications, and pneumonia—she has been unable to continue working. She is in need of both regular and rental sponsorship support to help provide food for her children and cover the cost of rent, giving the family the stability they need during this challenging time.

    Tarike Adane is a 26-year-old woman and the mother of a young son. She gave birth to her child at 22, but shortly after, the boy's father abandoned them, leaving her without the resources needed to properly care for him. Tarike was raised by her aunt after losing both of her parents at a young age. She also lives with clubfoot, which makes everyday life more difficult. On top of that, she also suffers from epilepsy, requiring ongoing medication. To support herself and provide for her son, Tarike runs a small coffee business to try and gain income. She is in need of a regular sponsor with rental support.

  • Meet Gezahegn

    Gezahegn Kibebetsehay is 19 years old. He is from the Kidane Miheret Orphanage. He finished high school this year and is planning to study fashion design. He loves to draw. He gained his drawing talent when he was in the orphanage. He wants to develop it and change his life while impacting other people's lives too. He doesn't know much about his family. He knows he has one brother and two sisters. They told him that they lost their parents when he was a kid. His brother and sisters have also grown up in other orphanages. Gezahegn was 11 years old when he joined the orphanage, and he stayed for about 8 years. He is now too old to live in the orphanage and is apart of our young adult aged out program. He is ready to join his friends who live in a group home, but he needs sponsorship to do that. Our aged out program sponsorship is $150/month.

    Sephonias Tegegn is an 8-year-old boy currently in 1st grade. He has one older sister. Both of his parents are HIV positive, and their health challenges have significantly impacted the family's ability to thrive. His father has lost one of his eyes due to the progression of the disease and also suffers from high blood pressure, requiring daily medication. His mother stays home to care for the household and is the family’s sole provider, doing all she can to support her children. This family is in need of regular sponsorship.

    Abebech Mamo is a dedicated single mother of eight children. To provide for her family, she works hard each day as a laborer, assisting with farm-related tasks for a local cattle owner. Her youngest daughter, Sitota Tesfaye, is 6 years old and hopes to become a doctor one day. Her determination shines despite the challenges her family faces. Abebech continues to do everything she can to support her children, but her income is minimal. This family is in need of a regular sponsorship.

    Olit Abebe is currently living with her grandmother, Zenebech, and her aunts. Her biological parents separated when she was just a baby, and she has been cared for by extended family ever since. Zenebech, is an elderly woman who often falls ill and relies heavily on the support of her adult children to manage daily life. Despite these challenges, Olit continues to grow up in a home filled with love. But, the family’s resources are limited. Regular, consistent support would make a meaningful difference in their life.

    Tayitu Dagne is a 42-year-old single mother of two who was displaced from the conflict-affected Dera region. With no family support and no stable source of income, she now struggles to keep her children safe and fed. Tayitu currently survives by begging. Her children are at risk of dropping out due to the family’s financial instability. Their most urgent needs include monthly rent assistance, food support, and basic educational support to help the children remain in school.

    Fitsum Dawit is 7-years-old and in Kindergarten. He is a child with special needs. His single mother, Serke, is doing everything she can to support him. Because Fitsum requires full-time care, Serke is unable to work outside the home, making it difficult to meet their basic needs. The family is currently in need of a regular sponsorship and help with rent. This would provide the vital stability they need to work towards a brighter future.

    Zelalem Solomon is a 12-year-old girl currently in 4th grade. She came to the Talita Rise Up Safe House after experiencing a personal trauma. She spent six months at the shelter, which provides care and healing, before being safely reintegrated at home with her mother. Since returning home, Zelalem has been doing well and thriving in her education. To ensure continued stability and access to quality learning opportunities, Zelalem and her mother are in need of a regular sponsorship and private school support.

    Alazar Bushera was born in Meki. He is currently working as a mobile maintenance employee. His dad passed away before he was born and his mom passed away when he was only 3 months old. A neighbor took him in and raised him. When he turned 15 years old he moved to Addis Ababa to start living in Cherkos with his friends and work. They are currently living in a plastic shelter. Alzar is in need of a regular sponsorship.

    Tigist Sileshi is a 30-year-old woman living with her brother and older sister. Tigist has been battling cancer for many years. Despite ongoing treatment, her condition has not improved. Her family’s situation has become increasingly difficult. Tigist’s older sister, who has been her primary support in seeking medical care, was recently diagnosed with a tumor herself and underwent surgery. In addition, Tigist’s brother lives with a mental illness and requires ongoing care and supervision. Due to their financial hardship, the family was forced to stop Tigist’s medical appointments, and her cancer has since progressed and spread. Her sister has resorted to begging to provide food for the family. They are in urgent need of a regular sponsor as well as medical support for Tigist’s cancer treatment and follow-up care.

  • Meet Tewodros

    Tewodros Gezachew is 16-years-old and currently in 7th grade. He lives with his mother, Ayal, and his two older brothers. Tewodros is the youngest of the three children. His mother, Ayal, used to work hard to support her family by baking and selling injera. However, due to vision loss caused by glaucoma, she was forced to stop her business, making it difficult to provide for her children. They are currently in need of a regular sponsorship, and help with rent to ensure stability for their family.

  • Meet Tinsae

    Tinsae Getachew is a 14-year-old girl in 8th grade who lives with her grandmother and dreams of becoming a software engineer. Her favorite subject is Mathematics. Tinsae lost her mother when she was just five months old, and her father has been missing for many years. Her grandmother has raised her ever since but suffers from a knee injury that was never treated and has worsened over time. With her declining mobility and no family support, the grandmother is now unable to work and has relied on begging in the past to survive. They are currently in need of a regular sponsorship along with medical support for the grandmother to help stabilize their situation and keep Tinsae in school.

    Woudnesh Birhanu is a married mother of two young children. She has Sitota (5) who is currently in Kindergarten, and a newborn son, Gebremedin, who is just 1 month old. Before giving birth, Woudnesh earned income by selling firewood, but she is now unable to work as she cares for her infant full-time. Her husband works as a daily laborer, but the income is unstable and not enough to support the family’s growing needs. They are now in need of both regular and rental support to help ensure a stable living environment during this vulnerable time.

She recently just lost her last child, at nine months while still in her womb. She is also dealing with a nerve problem currently.     Tsedalech Solomon is a 24-year-old college student pursuing a degree in Special Needs Education. She’s been blind since birth, but she has consistently defied the odds and risen above many challenges to become one of the most promising and inspiring young women in our program. Now in her third year, Tsedalech remains deeply committed to her studies and her goal of serving others with disabilities. To continue her journey, she is currently in need of a regular sponsorship as she works toward graduation and independence.

    Addisalem Esubalew is a mother of three boys who lives in Korah, near the trash dump. Two of her sons live with her and are currently attending school. Addisalem works hard each day to care for them and keep them in class. Despite her efforts, the family faces financial challenges. She also struggles with a minor health condition, which makes it difficult to maintain steady work. With limited resources, the family is in need of a regular sponsorship to help cover basic needs and ensure the children can continue their education in a safe and stable setting.

    Hareg Mandefro is a 20 year old bright and hardworking young woman who lives with her mother. When Hareg was just 16, her father — who was the sole provider for the family — passed away from HIV, leaving her mother to care for the children alone. Her mother, who is also living with HIV, now works as a part-time home maid, but the income she earns is minimal and not enough to support the children’s needs. Despite the hardship her family has endured, Hareg has continued to excel in her education. She completed her senior high school classes with strong grades and dreams of pursuing accounting. Hareg is in need of a regular sponsorship at $85/month to help provide her with continued care, education, and daily support. Your partnership would empower her to take the next step toward her accounting studies and a brighter future.

    Mekdelawit Tadese is 20 years old, and a mother to her two-year-old son, Zerubabel. She lived in the countryside with her mother for much of her life before relocating to Addis Ababa, where she stayed with her grandmother. As she began building a life of her own, she met her husband, who works in the trash dump area. The income he earns is minimal and not enough to meet the family’s basic needs. Despite the challenges, Mekdelawit is striving to give her son a better future. She is dedicated to caring for him and is hopeful for opportunities that will allow her family to move toward stability and independence. With regular support, she would be able to strengthen her household, and create opportunities for a brighter path ahead for herself and Zerubabel.

    Worku Hadebo is 22 and currently in 11th grade. He was born in Wolita, Ethiopia, but left his hometown at just 11 years old in search of a better life. For six difficult months, he survived on the streets near the Kasanchis area—until he found our Hand in Hand ministry, where he’s been for the past 10 years. Worku’s father passed away five years ago, and his mother still resides in Wolita. He is one of six children, with one older brother and four sisters. Despite the many challenges he's faced, Worku continues to push forward with resilience and grace. We are seeking a sponsor to support Worku with $170/month to help cover his basic needs, education, and continued care.

    Wude Abebe is a 35-year-old single mother living with HIV. Despite her health challenges, she remains strong and deeply committed to creating a better future for her 11-year-old child, who is currently in 5th grade. Wude lives in a rented home, and with no current stable source of income, she struggles to meet the most basic needs. She is highly motivated to become self-reliant and hopes to open a small coffee and tea café soon to generate income while managing her health and supporting her child’s education. They are in need of both a regular and rental sponsorship to gain the stability to start her business.

    Beyene Kebede lives with his wife Abigiya, and his daughter Betselot. Betselot is 16 years old and currently in 9th grade. Beyene has physical limitations and has been using a wheelchair for mobility for the past ten years. He remains active in his faith, and even hosts group worship in their home. Despite their strong sense of community and resilience, the family faces financial hardship and struggles to meet their basic needs. They are in need of food support and assistance with house rent to help provide stability for their household.

    Degitu is a 17-year-old girl currently in 11th grade who entered the Talita Rise Up Safe House following a traumatic event in her home community. Throughout this time, Talita Rise Up has provided her with safety, counseling, and educational support, helping her continue school and begin her healing journey. Degitu now lives in the Girls Group Home, where she is continuing her studies and rebuilding her future. She is in need of a regular sponsorship at $85/month to help provide her basic needs, education assistance, and continued care in a safe and stable environment.

    Yigzaw Haile is an 80-year-old grandfather caring for his 17-year-old grandson, Yohanes, who is currently in 12th grade. Yohanes dreams of becoming a computer science engineer and is working hard toward that goal despite the challenges he faces. Yohanes’ mother has passed away, and with no stable family income, Yigzaw is doing his best to care for him on his own. Due to his age and lack of work opportunities, Yigzaw has no steady source of income, making it difficult to meet their daily needs. The family is in urgent need of a regular sponsorship and assistance with rent to ensure Yohanes can continue his education.

    Zeritu Melese is a 40-year-old woman who came from the countryside in search of a better life. She lives alone and is HIV positive. She is currently taking medication to manage her condition. Zeritu also struggles with high blood pressure, which further limits her ability to work. Because of her ongoing health challenges, she has no steady source of income and is unable to support herself independently. Zeritu is in need of a regular sponsorship to help cover her basic needs and maintain her health and stability.

    Yide Woldu is a 38-year-old single mother raising her 13-year-old son, Temesigen, who is currently in 6th grade. Temesigen is a motivated student who dreams of becoming a doctor one day.     Dawit Challe is a 17-year-old student currently in 8th grade. His favorite subject is English, his favorite color is green, and he enjoys playing soccer. Dawit dreams of becoming a doctor one day. He lives with his mother, Bizuayehu, and his younger brother, Daniele (age 7). Both Dawit and his mother are living with HIV/AIDS, and his mother also suffers from a stomach ulcer. Dawit lives with a developmental disability, and his mother is unable to work due to her health challenges. With ongoing medical needs, and no steady income, the family is in urgent need of a regular sponsorship to help ensure continued stability and care for both children.

    Rediet Gizachew is 13 and currently in 7th grade. Her favorite subject is Social Science, and she enjoys playing Abarosh, a traditional local game. She hopes to one day support and help others. Rediet lives with her mother, Anchalu, who has been living with HIV/AIDS. Anchalu also struggles with health issues related to UTI’s. She is currently unable to work. As a single mother of two, she faces ongoing hardship with no stable income. The family is in urgent need of a regular sponsorship and assistance with house rent to help provide stability and continued care for the children.

    Medhanet is an 18-year-old girl who was previously in 6th grade, but was forced to stop her education due to severe family hardship. She lives with her mother, grandparents, sister, and uncle. Her mother, Abenet, is the family’s primary provider, taking on daily labor such as washing clothes, baking injera, and assisting with construction work. The income is unstable and not enough to support the entire household. Medhanet’s uncle, Dooramo, lives with a mental illness and requires regular medication and special care. Medhanet has two younger siblings, Yetinayet (12) and Besufikad (5). The family is in need of a regular sponsorship and medical assistance. They are also highly motivated to become self-reliant through a small business selling injera, shiro, pepper, and mash to help stabilize their future.

    Abenet is a 15-year-old student in 6th grade who lives with his two younger brothers and sister in their uncle’s home after losing both of their parents three years ago.     Ashenafi Sisay is 17 and currently in 9th grade. He lives with his father who struggles with an alcohol addiction. Because of his addiction, Ashenafi is left to take on significant responsibility. Despite these challenges, he stays focused on his future and dreams of becoming a professional football player. He works hard both in his studies and his passion for the sport. Regular sponsorship support is needed to help Ashenafi maintain stability and continue his education while pursuing his goals.

    Almaz Metena is a mother of three young children. She is raising them on her own after her husband left a year and a half ago. Her children are Azegaju (7), Asebu (5), and Dinknesh (3). During the rainy season, their home leaks, making their living conditions even more difficult.     Tiruedle Mekuria is a 16-year-old girl currently in 5th Grade. Her favorite subject is English, and she is a bright, motivated student with a dream of becoming a doctor one day so she can help others in need. Tiruedle lives with her mother, Alem, who is suffering from a serious nerve condition. In hopes of finding healing, Alem traveled to Entoto Mountain to seek treatment through Holy Water, but their living situation has become increasingly unstable as a result. They are in need of both regular and rental support to help Tiruedle continue focusing on her education.

    Alemtsehay Ketema is a 35-year-old married mother of two who has HIV/AIDS. She lives with her husband, Tadesse, and their two children: Tizita (8) and Hiri (5). Alemtsehay’s husband works as a day laborer, but the income is not enough to meet the family’s basic needs. Alemtsehay contributes by making injera and washing clothes in people’s homes whenever possible. She is in need of a regular sponsorship to help get her family on track towards a stable future.
